About Värmland
The county of Värmland is home to more than 273 000 people over an area of 17 586 square kilometres. There are 16 municipalities here. In area, Torsby is biggest and Hammarö is smallest. However, in terms of population the county town of Karlstad is the biggest, with around 85 000 inhabitants, and Munkfors with around 3 700 inhabitants is the smallest.
Värmland borders on Norway, and from the border Oslo is just 100 km away. From the county boundary in the east, Stockholm is 250 km away.
Värmland sits on water. There are 10 512 lakes here, including Lake Vänern in the south; this is the biggest inland lake in Western Europe. Other large, important lakes are Fryken, Glafsfjorden and Värmeln. The Klarälven river is hugely important, extending 000 km from north to south, where it opens out into Lake Vänern.
Granberget at Höljes, at 701 metres above sea level, is the highest mountain in Värmland. Tossebergsklätten between Sunne and Torsby, at 342 metres above sea level, is also a popular and exciting place to enjoy the views.
