Municipalities

The municipalities are tasked by the public sector to provide service in many different areas for their citizens. They're responsible for issues such as primary and secondary schools and upper secondary schools, care for children and the elderly, social issues, libraries, streets, parks, sanitation, water and drainage. Thus the work that takes place in the municipalities is of major importance to citizens' everyday lives, security and the labour market in the areas and region.

The municipalities are governed by politicians elected by the people. The main decision-making body is the municipal council, where members are directly elected by citizens.

There are 16 municipalities in Värmland. Värmland also includes the municipalities of Karlskoga and Degerfors, which are part of the county of Örebro. In addition, the municipality of Hällefors has opted to cooperate with Värmland as regards the tourist trade.
