If you're thinking about working in Värmland, there are lots of industries to choose from: the pulp and paper industry, the packaging industry, steel and engineering, healthcare and the IT industry. Many of these companies are looking for manpower and are hoping that more people will realise the opportunities offered by working in Värmland.

500 IT jobs

Compare is a networking organisation for IT and telecoms companies. Their member companies need to take on new staff with all kinds of skills.

"We can see that there'll be a need to take on more than 500 new staff over the next two years. This development is due in no small part to our spot on the map. The Norwegian market is growing, and we know that the Oslo, which is growing at a spectacular pace, is just 200 kilometres away. We need manpower and skills from outside because we don't want to compete amongst ourselves for staff. We want more people to become part of our fabulous family," says Göran Österman, Executive Officer at Compare.

More engineers and technicians

The Värmland pulp and paper industry is famous the world over. Within The Paper Province, the industry network, skills supply manager Marianne Andersson reckons there's an increased need for manpower.

"Our industry is growing, and at present there's a major need for technicians, engineers and other staff for our companies. There's a tremendous amount of scope in terms of both size and operations between the companies here in the region, and there are jobs available at everything from small consultancies to major international concerns," says Marianne Andersson.

Jobs available in healthcare and nursing

There are also plenty of opportunities for work and developments for anyone wanting to work in healthcare and nursing.

"There are plenty of opportunities for career development once basic training has been completed. We do a lot of work within the county council to provide advanced training for both nurses and doctors, but before long we're going to need a major recruitment drive within certain professional groups. Above all, we very much need to recruit experienced specialists," says Elisabeth Wikström, skills strategist at Värmland County Council.

Jobs and quality of life

Offering staff jobs and quality of life is what makes Värmland stand out from the crowd. This is something which Göran, Marianne and Elisabeth all agree on.

"Although we can't always compete with the pace of life in the big city, we've got lots more to offer in terms of quality of life. Here, you can work at companies that offer both careers and development, and at the same time you have so much more on your doorstep as well. Take a look outside and you'll see the countryside, with its lakes, ski slopes and forests," says Marianne Andersson.

Göran Österman has found that a lot of people moving to Värmland to work find it a great place to move to.

"People don't just vanish in the crowd here. It's easy to become part of the community and build networks, and we have sports, culture, shopping and the outdoor life so there's plenty to do with your time off," he says.
